Zemira Alajbegović in Neven Korda: Video essay

WORLD OF ART
School for curators and critics of contemporary art
Year 13
1st Semester (April – June 2011)

Workshops on writing about contemporary art

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce the theory and practice of the video essay in the area of culture and art.

During the workshop, the participants will engage in all stages of the development of a video essay. They will learn how to write a script, shoot a video essay, select interviewees, and collaborate with the editor on the final product, adding the music and captions.

At an art event, a video essay has an advantage over other media, as it can fully or partly show the event to the viewers and present the artists, curators and other people involved. How the event is shot and edited and the ratio between images and words are all significant factors.
The theme of the video essay is the year-long program of the World of Art school. The participants will film selected activities (workshops, study excursions, debates, studio visits, the final show, etc.), gradually gaining the necessary knowledge and skills, and prepare a complex video recording of the whole process.
