Asta Vrečko: Art System in Slovenia – A Walk Through 20th Century

World of Art | School for Curatorial Practices and Critical Writing | Year 16

Slovenian art entered the 20th century institutionally fairly undernourished. The so-called First Slovenian Art Exhibition took place in 1900, and the first purpose-built exhibition space Jakopič pavilion opened its doors in 1909. In the period between the two World Wars various societies took on the role of developing art, and art exhibitions were held in different more or less appropriate locations. In spite of some significant success the Kingdom of Yugoslavia had not proved to be the best starting point for establishing a functioning art system; unheard remained calls for an academy, so the key art institutions came into being only after the Second World War. Art field of that time was marked by the framework of the socialist Yugoslav state, diverse exhibition activity and building connections to the international context.
